Correctional Services Learnerships 2026

Correctional Services Learnerships 2026 (South Africa)

The Correctional Services Learnership Programme 2026 is a training opportunity offered by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) in South Africa. The programme is designed to provide unemployed youth with skills, work experience, and knowledge in the correctional services sector. It combines theoretical training with practical workplace experience in correctional centres across the country.

This learnership is aimed at developing young people who want to work in the justice and security sector. It also helps the government address youth unemployment while building skilled professionals who can work in prisons, rehabilitation programmes, and community correction services.

Overview of the Correctional Services Learnership

The Correctional Services Learnership is usually offered as a Further Education and Training (FET) Certificate in Correctional Services (NQF Level 4). This qualification focuses on rehabilitation, offender management, and maintaining safe correctional facilities.

The learnership normally runs for 12 months and includes both classroom learning and practical training. During the programme, learners are trained to assist with the management of offenders and support rehabilitation initiatives in correctional centres.

Successful learners may later be considered for permanent positions as correctional officials, although employment is not guaranteed.

Duration and Training Structure

The learnership consists of two main parts:

1. Theoretical Training

Approximately 30% of the programme focuses on classroom learning at accredited correctional training colleges.

During this phase, learners study topics such as:

  • Correctional services legislation
  • Human rights and offender rehabilitation
  • Security procedures in correctional centres
  • Firearm training
  • Physical fitness training
  • Self-defence techniques

Learners are usually required to stay at the training college during this phase. Accommodation, meals, uniforms, and training materials are provided by the department.

2. Workplace Training

The remaining 70% of the programme takes place at correctional centres and community correction offices.

Here, learners gain practical experience by:

  • Assisting correctional officials
  • Monitoring inmates
  • Supporting rehabilitation programmes
  • Learning administrative and security procedures

This practical training allows learners to understand how correctional facilities operate in real situations.

Monthly Stipend

Learners who are accepted into the programme receive a monthly stipend of about R3 500 to R3 700

The stipend is meant to help cover basic living expenses during the training period. However, learners are not considered permanent employees and therefore do not receive benefits such as medical aid or pension contributions.
